My father entered retirement last week. After 36 years with the same employer.

Change is hard. It comes with mourning over the loss of the old, and with spending energy to get used to the new.

Especially at work, change causes stress. Even if things change for the better.

The key for you to lead your team through change is flexibility

Research by T. Judge found that a Positive Self-Concept makes you more flexible. Basically, positive thinking and self-esteem will help you through change.

Change in the workplace can attack your self-esteem. You were just confident in the situation, and now it changes. It rocks your core, your identity.

You can train your flexibility muscle. By practicing dealing with change, you will increase your confidence to deal with it.

-Expose yourself to risks and change. Try a new brand of butter, give the hairdresser free rein, cook that new recipe.

-Step out of your comfort zone. Take on a project you normally would not, or work with a team you do not know.

-Set new goals. Letting go of the old is easier when you focus on something new.

Lucky for my father, I decided to redecorate last week. So he is helping. It gives my dad a new goal. Me a crisp wall. And us both some memorable bonding moments.
