Just finished Drive to Survive on Netflix.

Wow, in Formula 1 they really know how to celebrate success!

The whole team storms to the fences to welcome the winning driver.

Everybody hugs and shakes hands, congratulating each other.

The driver climbs on top of his car and throws his fists in the air.

The driver hugs and congratulates the team and vice versa.

Trophy.

Champagne.

Pictures.

More hugging and congratulating.

They really celebrate success.

Do you?

When you get a great rating, deliver a smooth presentation, asked a brilliant question in a difficult meeting. Do you at least pat yourself on the back?

Positive psychology has shown time and again: celebrating success is crucial. Even small wins.

It leads to stronger confidence and more motivation, which leads subsequently to better performance and more success to celebrate.

A positive self-perpetuating cycle of winning.

You think that’s just wishy washy? There’s neuroscience behind this. Celebrating success releases dopamine into your brain, which makes you feel good and makes you look for more achievements to accomplish for the next dopamine-hit.

Should you celebrate big like the F1 drivers? Up to you. A happy dance, an out-loud ‘yes’, a big smile to yourself in the mirror. Whatever suits you. As long as you take time to really register your success.

How do you celebrate?
