“If I just work hard, they will notice.”
“My work speaks for itself. I don’t want to play the game.”
I hear it so often. I see it working out so little.
When you are young, everything you do is great. Even when you put all your flamingo stickers upside down, you’re still the greatest artist who ever lived.
But you grow up. And if you want to progress at work, people need to know about you and your work. And the hard reality is: it is up to you to make sure they do.
No matter how much you wish it were different, or how much you think it should be different. You need to promote yourself. Even more so when working remotely.
A few tips we give our clients, especially new/aspiring leaders:
1 - Take a risk and don’t be afraid to fail.
Take on a challenge. Show courage. That is a very valuable trait. And learning from failure is, too!
2 - Say no
Say no to mundane, unchallenging tasks. Not only are those not the ones that will impress and get you ahead, people will associate you with those tasks and they’ll come snowballing in. Respectfully decline.
3 - Find your spokesperson
Who will blow your trumpet when you’re not around? Choose a few strategic people around you that will speak up for you, and make sure they know what you do. Then you don’t have to do it all yourself.
We can work on these (and more) strategies together in our coaching sessions. If you’re interested, get in touch!
