Two are flourishing, one is still tiny.
Growing something, or someone, is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
We think we know how to motivate others and what makes them thrive. But we are actually pretty bad at it.
We suffer from Extrinsic Incentive Bias. We are inclined to think someone is more motivated by extrinsic incentives (a bonus, a salary increase, a lease car) rather than intrinsic incentives (recognition, learning something new, developing oneself).
A striking study by Chip Health (1999) showed that managers rated monetary rewards as very important for their team members. However, when these team members were asked to rate their drivers, monetary rewards were much lower on the list.
Leaders, be aware of your biases. Every individual is motivated by their own set of drivers. The only way to know them, is to ask.
Then you can help them blossom.
I’m moving my tiny sunflower into a sunnier spot.
